How it works: the math behind the tool
Materials are calculated from what you actually used: ball price ÷ ball weight × grams weighed on a kitchen scale, plus accessories and packaging (safety eyes, fiberfill, buttons, labels, bags).
Labour is your time multiplied by an hourly rate, or the stitches worked multiplied by a rate per 100 stitches. Overhead (electricity, hooks, photos, shipping supplies) is a percentage on top of materials and labour.
Wholesale = (materials + labour + overhead) × (1 + margin) · Retail = wholesale × 2 · Net = retail − fees − materials − overhead
Wholesale price = (materials + labour + overhead) × (1 + profit margin). Recommended retail price = wholesale × 2, the usual multiplier for handmade goods sold through shops; you can change it. The sales channel then takes a percentage of the price plus a fixed amount per sale.
Real net earnings = retail − channel fees − materials − overhead: what is left to pay your time plus profit. The minimum price is the one that covers materials, labour, overhead and fees with no profit: (materials + labour + overhead + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee %). Shopee Brazil uses price tiers, so the tier is recalculated for each price.
Why weigh the finished piece
Yarn labels give the weight of a full ball, but a project rarely uses whole balls. Weighing the finished piece (or the leftovers) on a kitchen scale and multiplying by the price per gram gives the exact yarn cost, which is often 20–40 % lower than counting whole balls for small items and higher than expected for blankets. Keep the receipt price including tax and shipping when you bought the yarn.
Accessories are easy to forget and add up quickly on small pieces: a pair of safety eyes, 10 g of fiberfill, a label, a gift bag and a business card can cost more than the yarn of an amigurumi. Enter them per piece; for packaging bought in bulk, divide the pack price by the number of units.
Wholesale, retail and what the platform keeps
Wholesale is the price a shop would pay you; it must already include your pay and a margin. Retail at twice the wholesale price leaves room for a shop’s margin and for your own discounts when you sell directly. If you sell only online and never wholesale, the retail price still has to absorb the platform fees: a 10 % fee on a €40 piece is €4 that comes out of your earnings.
The fee presets reflect the published rates in November 2026: Etsy 6.5 % transaction plus Etsy Payments processing and a $0.20 listing fee; Shopify Payments and Stripe card rates; Mercado Livre Clássico commission; and Shopee Brazil price tiers. Platforms add or change fees regularly, and ads, currency conversion, VAT and shipping labels are extra, so check your seller dashboard and edit the percentage and fixed fee when they differ.

Frequently asked questions
How do I price crochet items?
Add up materials (yarn by the gram plus accessories), your time at a fair hourly rate and a share of overhead; add a profit margin to get the wholesale price and double it for retail. Then check that the price still pays you after the platform fees.
How much does Etsy take from a sale?
In the US, a 6.5 % transaction fee, payment processing of 3 % + $0.25 and a $0.20 listing fee. In the EU processing is 4 % + €0.30 and in the UK 4 % + £0.20. Offsite Ads (12–15 %) and some local regulatory fees come on top.
What hourly rate should I charge for crochet?
At least your local minimum wage. Many makers use €12–20 or $15–25 per hour. If the retail price looks too high, choose quicker designs or thicker yarn rather than lowering your hourly rate.
Do I have to put a care label on handmade crochet?
In the EU and UK textile products sold to consumers must state their fibre composition, and care instructions are strongly recommended. In Brazil, Inmetro rules require composition and care on the label. The tags in tab B include both.
