Yarn comparison · data-first

Compare two yarns side by side

Pick any two yarns and compare weight, fibre, yardage, m/100 g, hook size, gauge and texture side by side, then convert balls from one yarn to the other.

How the yarn comparison works

Each comparison uses only the data printed on the manufacturers' ball bands: weight category, fibre content, grams and meters per ball, the resulting meters per 100 g, recommended hook, reference gauge and construction. Nothing is estimated from photos or reviews.

Our database covers 128 yarns. The 193 most relevant pairs, yarns of the same weight category with a high Match Score, have their own comparison page with a technical verdict; you can still compare any other combination with the selectors above.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if two yarns are interchangeable?

Compare their meters per 100 g, weight category, recommended hook and gauge. Yarns within about 10 % in density, of the same category and with overlapping hook ranges usually swap well; always confirm with a swatch.

Why convert yarn by meters instead of by grams?

Two yarns of the same weight can have very different lengths per gram. A pattern consumes length, so converting by meters gives you the right number of balls while converting by grams can leave you short.

What is the Match Score?

It is a 0–100 score that weighs linear density, weight category, fibre, texture and hook overlap between two yarns. Above 80 % is a strong substitute; between 60 and 80 % works with adjustments.
