What is jumbo yarn?

Jumbo (CYC 7) is the thickest category in the Craft Yarn Council system and includes jumbo and roving yarns, often used for arm knitting, hand crochet and giant blankets. The strand is so thick that a few stitches cover several centimetres.

Standard specs and real data

The Craft Yarn Council standard places 7 – Jumbo yarns with a recommended crochet hook of ≥ 15 mm and a gauge of ≤ 6 single crochet stitches in 10 cm (4 in). Use these ranges as a starting point: the hook and gauge printed on each ball band, listed in the table below, always take priority.

We have not verified any yarn of this exact group yet. The closest yarns in our database are listed below so you can compare yardage and hook sizes.

Best projects and how much yarn you need

Jumbo yarn is used for chunky blankets, pet beds, rugs and statement home décor, often worked with hands instead of hooks. The closest yarns in our database are super bulky (CYC 6), listed below with their real yardage.

How to choose and substitute

Compare yarns by meters per 100 g rather than by brand or ball weight: two yarns within about 10 % of each other in density, with overlapping hook ranges, usually give the same fabric. Sort the table by density or hook size to find close matches quickly.

Before swapping yarns in a pattern, convert the number of balls by total length, buy every ball from the same dye lot and work a 12 × 12 cm swatch. Our side-by-side comparisons below show the exact ball conversion and a technical verdict for the most searched pairs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between jumbo and super bulky yarn?

Jumbo (CYC 7) is thicker than super bulky (CYC 6): the Craft Yarn Council gives 6 or fewer stitches in 10 cm and hooks of 15 mm or larger for jumbo, versus 7–9 stitches and 9–15 mm hooks for super bulky.

Can I swap one yarn of this group for another?

Usually yes, if their meters per 100 g are within about 10 % and the hook ranges overlap. Convert the number of balls by total length, not by weight, and always check your gauge with a swatch before starting.
