How it works: the math behind the tool

Every chart is generated from data, not drawn by hand: stitch names and yarn multipliers come from our stitch database, hook conversions and gauge ranges from the Craft Yarn Council system, and meters per 100 g from the verified yarns in our database, so the sheets update when the data does.

Hat sizes use head circumferences and heights from a published hat size chart, with hat circumference = head × 0.90 and crown diameter = hat circumference ÷ π. Blanket starting chains are width × stitches per cm + 1 at the midpoint of each CYC single crochet gauge range.

Crown ⌀ = (head × 0.90) ÷ π · Starting chain = width × sts/cm + 1

Amigurumi safety eye sizes are proportions of the head width rounded to common eye sizes, presented as a style guide. Each sheet prints on a single A4 page with the CrochetMetrics signature.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between US and UK crochet terms?

UK patterns name each stitch one step taller: a US single crochet (sc) is a UK double crochet (dc), a US double crochet is a UK treble (tr), and a US slip stitch (sl st) is a UK slip stitch (ss). Check the first sheet before you start a pattern from another country.

Which crochet stitches use the most yarn?

Textured stitches use far more yarn than plain ones: in our model, jasmine, crocodile, popcorn, puff and bobble stitches use 2.2 to 3.1 times the yarn of double crochet for the same area, while filet mesh and tall stitches use less.

Can I print these crochet charts?

Yes. Each sheet has its own Print button that prints only that chart on one A4 page, with colors preserved. They are free for personal use.
