Sturdy Round & Rectangular Crochet Basket Pattern Generator

A firm basket needs tight single crochet, a flat base and a crisp fold into the wall. Choose a round or rectangular basket, its diameter or base and height, and the generator writes every round for your yarn — optionally with two strands held together for extra stiffness.

Pre-filled with an estimate from the Craft Yarn Council standard for this weight. Crochet a 10 × 10 cm swatch in the pattern stitch and type your real numbers: the whole pattern recalculates.

Row-by-row instructions

Suggested hook: 5.5–6.5 mm (CYC range for this weight).

  1. Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in the ring; join with sl st to the first sc. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; join. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * 5 more times; join. (18)
  4. Rnds 4–14: Ch 1, *sc in each st until 1 st remains before the next increase, 2 sc in next st; rep from * 5 more times; join. Each round adds 6 sts (Rnd n has 6 × n sts): Rnd 14 = 84 sts, base ⌀ ≈ 7.9 in (20 cm).
  5. Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc in the back loop only of each st around; join. (84) This round folds the base up into a crisp wall.
  6. Rnds 16–34: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join. (84)
  7. Rnd 35 (rim): Ch 1, sl st loosely in each st around for a firm edge. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Height ≈ 5.9 in (15 cm).

Abbreviations: ch = chain · sl st = slip stitch · sc = single crochet · dc = double crochet · FPdc = front post double crochet · BPdc = back post double crochet.

The stitch: single crochet in joined rounds

The round base is a flat circle: 6 single crochets in a magic ring and 6 increases on every round, so round n has 6 × n stitches. One round worked in the back loop only turns the base up at a sharp angle, and plain rounds of single crochet build the wall. The rectangular version starts from a flat panel of rows.

How this generator calculates the pattern

The generator converts your target size into stitches and rows with your gauge (stitches and rows per 10 cm). The foundation chain is then rounded to the nearest count that respects the stitch multiple of the pattern (Magic ring), so the repeat always ends exactly at the edge of the row. The number of rows is rounded to the nearest whole row, and the finished size shown in the schematic is recalculated from those whole numbers, so what you see is what you will crochet.

Construction

Work with a hook about 1 mm smaller than the ball band suggests (or two strands held together) so the fabric stands up on its own. Handle openings are made by chaining over skipped stitches two rounds below the rim, which is finished with a round of slip stitches.

Why your gauge matters

Two crocheters using the same yarn and hook can easily differ by 10–15 % in tension. When you choose a yarn, the gauge is pre-filled with an estimate from the Craft Yarn Council standard for its weight category; it is only a starting point. Crochet a swatch of at least 12 × 12 cm in the pattern stitch, block it as you will block the finished piece, count the stitches and rows in the central 10 cm and type them in: every number in the pattern follows.

How much yarn you need

Yarn length is estimated with our calibrated model: metres = area ÷ 100 × 0.82 × √(metres per 100 g) × stitch factor, plus a 10 % safety margin. The stitch factor comes from our stitch database (for example, single crochet 1.30, double crochet 1.00, waffle stitch 1.85). Buying all the balls from the same dye lot avoids visible colour bands.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a crochet basket stiff?

Use single crochet with a smaller hook than usual, hold two strands of yarn together, and work the first wall round in the back loop only. Cotton and cotton blends hold their shape better than acrylic.

What if my gauge is different from the pattern?

Type your own stitches and rows per 10 cm in the gauge fields. The generator recalculates the foundation chain (keeping the stitch multiple), the number of rows and the amount of yarn, so the piece still comes out at the size you chose.

Can I use a different yarn than the one suggested?

Yes. Choose any yarn from our database or enter your gauge for an unlisted yarn. The yarn kit box shows how many balls you need and the two closest substitutes from our database, matched by thickness, fibre and texture.
