Body measurements: Craft Yarn Council standard size charts (Woman XS–5X, Baby, Child), midpoint of each range. Our assumptions: garment length = back waist length + 15 cm (adult), 7.5 cm (child) or 5 cm (baby) + your adjustment; ease is scaled by chest ÷ 94 cm in children's sizes; straight sleeve = upper arm + proportional ease, length = arm to underarm − shoulder drop; yarn = calibrated model of our yarn calculator + 10 % margin. CYC lists the 5X upper arm as 18½ in (49.5 cm); the cm value is used.
Craft Yarn Council standard body measurements used
The grading table starts from the Craft Yarn Council standard size charts for women, babies and children. When the CYC gives a range, the midpoint is used. Finished measurements add your chosen ease.

How it works: the math behind the tool
Body measurements come from the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) standard size charts: the Woman chart for XS to 5X, and the Baby and Child charts for 6, 12 and 24 months and 4, 6 and 8 years. Where the CYC publishes a range (for example bust 32–34 in for S) we use the midpoint in centimeters. The full table we use is printed below the calculator so you can check every number. One known inconsistency: the CYC lists the 5X upper arm as 18½ in but 49.5 cm; we use the centimeter value.
Finished bust = body bust + ease. Each panel (front and back of a drop-shoulder sweater or vest) covers half of it, and cardigan fronts cover a quarter each. The stitch count is finished width × stitches per cm, rounded to the nearest number that fits your stitch multiple (a × k + b), so a “4 + 1” pattern always gets 4k + 1 stitches; the foundation chain adds the turning chain of your first-row stitch (+1 for single crochet and half double, +2 for double crochet). For children’s sizes we scale the ease by bust ÷ 94 cm, so “+5 cm classic” does not swamp a baby sweater.
Stitches = round to multiple ((body bust + ease) ÷ 2 × stitches per cm) · Chain = stitches + turning chain
Declared assumptions: body length = CYC back waist length + 15 cm drop for adults (7.5 cm for kids, 5 cm for babies) plus your length adjustment; drop-shoulder sleeves are straight tubes as wide as the upper arm plus proportional ease, as long as the arm to underarm minus the shoulder overhang; vest armholes are decreased from the CYC armhole depth down to the cross-back width. Yarn uses the same calibrated model as our yarn calculator (meters = area ÷ 100 × 0.82 × √density × stitch factor) plus a 10 % safety margin, rounded up to whole balls per size.

Frequently asked questions
How do I grade a crochet pattern into multiple sizes?
Start from standard body measurements (we use the Craft Yarn Council charts), add the same ease to every size, convert each finished width into stitches with your gauge and round to your stitch multiple. Example: size M bust 94 cm + 5 cm ease = 99 cm; each panel is 49.5 cm; at 16 sts per 10 cm that is 79.2 stitches, which a 4 + 1 multiple rounds to 81 (chain 82 for single crochet).
How much ease should a crochet sweater have?
Common choices are 0 cm for a fitted garment, about +5 cm (2 in) for a classic fit, +10 cm (4 in) for a relaxed fit and +15 cm (6 in) or more for an oversized look. Negative ease (−5 cm) is only suitable for very stretchy fabric. The calculator also accepts any custom value in cm or inches.
What does “Chain 73 (81, 89, 97)” mean in a pattern?
It is standard pattern notation: the first number is for the smallest size and the numbers in parentheses and brackets are for each larger size in order. The calculator writes this line for you for every piece, following the size order shown in its header.
How much yarn do I need for each size?
The calculator multiplies the real area of every piece by our calibrated yarn model for the chosen yarn and stitch, adds a 10 % margin and rounds up to whole balls, so you get meters, grams and balls for each of the nine sizes, with a shopping link per size.
