Crochet Pattern Math & Stitch Count Auditor
Paste a crochet pattern written row by row or round by round and the auditor recalculates every line: it adds the stitches each instruction consumes from the previous row and the stitches it produces, expands repeats such as (sc, inc) x 6 or *sc 2, inc; rep from * 5 more times, and compares the result with the stitch count printed at the end of the line. Mistakes are flagged instantly, and the total stitch count becomes a yarn estimate for the yarn you choose.

Assumptions: inc = 1 st into 2; dec, sc2tog and invdec = 2 sts into 1; turning chains and joining slip stitches do not count; “N times” = N passes and “N more times” = N + 1; each row starts from the declared count. Yarn: 8.5 × stitch width per single crochet (Craft Yarn Council gauge), taller stitches proportionally more, +10 %. Your pattern never leaves your browser.
How it works: the math behind the tool
How a line is counted. Every basic stitch – single, half double, double and treble crochet, slip stitches, front and back loop or post variations and bobbles – takes one stitch from the previous row and makes one. An increase (inc, or 2 sc in the next stitch) takes one and makes two, while a decrease (dec, sc2tog or an invisible decrease) takes two and makes one; three-together decreases take three. Turning chains and joining slip stitches are ignored, a chain marked "counts as a stitch" replaces the first stitch, and stitches worked into a magic ring do not consume anything. Chains in the middle of a row add stitches and skipped stitches are consumed without producing any.
How repeats are expanded. Brackets and parentheses followed by x 6 or 6 times are multiplied six times; *…*; rep from * 5 more times counts the first pass plus five repeats, and "around" or "across" repeats a group or a stitch until the stitches of the previous round run out. The next row always starts from the declared count when the pattern gives one, so a single typo is reported once instead of breaking every following row. Ranges such as Rnds 7–12 are audited one round at a time, and up to 300 rows are checked per pattern. Choose UK terms when the pattern uses UK names (double crochet means US single crochet).
Row total = Σ (stitches made) · Consumed = Σ (stitches taken from the previous row) · inc = 1 → 2 · dec = 2 → 1 · [ … ] x N = N × group · Yarn (cm) = Σ stitches × factor × 8.5 × stitch width × 1.10
From stitches to yarn. The auditor sums all the stitches of the piece and converts them into yarn with the stitch model of our amigurumi generator: each single crochet uses about 8.5 times the width of a stitch, taken from the Craft Yarn Council gauge of the yarn weight, and taller stitches use proportionally more (half double ×1.33, double ×1.54, treble ×2). A 10 % safety margin is added and the length is converted into grams and balls of the commercial yarn you pick from our database, with links to buy it. The whole analysis runs in your browser: the pattern you paste is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check the stitch count of a crochet pattern?
Paste the pattern with one row or round per line, keep the declared count at the end of each line, for example (18), and choose US or UK terms. The auditor recalculates every line and marks it as verified, as a mismatch with the count the formula produces, or as a warning when the row does not work all the stitches of the previous one.
Why does my round have the wrong stitch count?
The usual causes are a repeat that runs one time short or long, an increase written as "inc" where the pattern needs two stitches in one, or a turning chain counted as a stitch. The audit table shows how many stitches each line consumes and produces, so you can see exactly where the numbers stop matching.
Does "repeat 5 more times" mean 5 or 6 repeats?
It means six: the first time you work the instructions plus five more repeats. The auditor reads "5 more times" as six passes and "6 times" or "x 6" as six passes in total, which is how most modern patterns use those phrases.
Can it estimate how much yarn the pattern uses?
Yes. It adds up every stitch of the piece and converts the total into metres, grams and balls with the gauge of the yarn weight you select, or of a specific commercial yarn from our database, including a 10 % safety margin. Treat it as a planning estimate and weigh a swatch for exact figures.
